A white spot on the nail is a sign that there is a change in the structure of the nail, which can be caused by a nutritional deficiency, allergies or minor knocks. Leukonychia is what we call white spots on the nails and it's more common than you might think. Their origin is very diverse.

White spots on the nails can appear on both the toenails and fingernails. However, if they appear frequently, they may indicate a lack of certain essential nutrients such as calcium, zinc or vitamin B12, for example.

In fact, it's due to a lack of keratin in the nails. This situation can stop nail growth for a short time. It can also be linked to a specific physical or emotional condition, such as stress (occasional or constant) or extreme contact with the cold.

The main causes of white spots on the nails are:

• Allergy to substances, such as nail polish or cleaning products, for example;

• Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of calcium, iron, zinc, silicon, folic acid or vitamin B12, due to poor diet;

• Minor trauma to the nail, such as catching your finger somewhere or suffering a manicure injury;

• Some medical treatments, such as chemotherapy;

• Hormonal variations in women;

• The presence of certain diseases, such as anaemia, psoriasis, vitiligo, tuberculosis, kidney disease, mycosis, cirrhosis of the liver, congestive heart failure and diabetes;

• Exposure to extreme temperatures, especially the cold.

In the case of women who paint their nails, they should remove the nail polish well before repainting and moisturise them well. In addition, protective gloves should be worn when using products that can cause allergies, such as cleaning products, dishwashing products, etc.

Cleanliness is also very important for good nail hygiene to help keep them healthy. Mossi has a Skin and Nail Disinfectant that contains a biocidal agent (BARDAC) that has a broad spectrum of bacterial, fungicidal and virucidal action. Our professionals use this product in their manicure, pedicure and podiatry services. It acts in vitro on the HIV and Hepatitis B viruses. It can be used on skin, nails and instruments.

To complement the service, Mossi has launched an excellent product to apply to nails and skin. Cuticle Oil nourishes the skin around the nails, regenerates and strengthens the nails and nail bed.

Its advantage is that it slows down cuticle growth. Contains natural pink flower petals, which give the oil a natural fragrance. These leaves may change colour over time, but this does not alter the quality of the cuticle and nail oil.

It can be applied to natural nails that are sensitive or damaged so that the oil can repair the growth of the nail.

It is very important for the professional to take care to sterilise instruments after use on a client, as bacteria can be transmitted to other clients.

All our disinfectants have a technical data sheet as they are registered with INFARMED.
